研究テーマ

  • 宇宙物理学理論研究の中で，とくに磁場・プラズマに絡んだ現象・X線ガンマ線に絡んだ高エネルギー現象に注目して研究しています。基本的な道具立てである電磁流体力学，プラズマ物理学の教育を行っています。
    従来電波パルサーとして知られていた高速に回転する磁化した中性子星（パルサー）が強いガンマ線源であることが最近明らかになってきました。パルサー磁気圏では10の12乗eV以上に相対論的に粒子が加速されています。パルサー風は，ディスク・ジェット構造を示します。パルサーに限らず回転する磁気圏は粒子加速のすばらしい実験場です。このような磁気圏における粒子加速の機構を研究しています。
    パルサーにおける粒子加速の理論や磁場構造をきめるGS方程式を解いた仕事は世界的にも注目されてました。パルサーの電波の伝播効果を利用して銀河内の乱流磁場構造を探査します。
    最近は理論だけでなく、X線天文衛星の観測によってパルサー活動の観測的研究にも研究を拡大しました。最近，理研のグループと共同でパルサーが作るシンクロトロン星雲を大量に発見したのは大きな成果でした。そして，わたしたちはこのパルサー星雲の理論をただちに提出しました。
    天文学の基礎を教育する講義及びコンピュータシミュレーション教育も行なっています。
    また、やまがた天文台を中心にしてNPO法人小さな天文学者の会を主宰し、科学を文化までに高めるための活動を行っています。そのための有力な方法として「星のソムリエ（星空案内人）制度」を創始し全国展開を図っています。
