Since 1983, Dr. Yoichiro Tanaka had worked in Toshiba on technology development and business of storage products. The main contributions have been on the storage technology development for information technology (IT) evolution. Drawing on his expertise in magnetic recording physics, he had played a key role in Toshiba's technological breakthroughs in HDD recording technology for high areal recording density. Among his achievements and contributions are the research and development of a GMR head and granular magnetic recording media. However, his most notable achievement was the 20 years he devoted to the proof and development of practical perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the most important HDD technology breakthrough of the last decade or more, and the successful realization of the world's first PMR HDD in 2005. Dr. Tanaka had lead the architecture development of hybrid storage system with NAND flash memory in R&D Center in Silicon Valley, USA since 2009. Given this background, Dr. Yoichiro Tanaka has been working on research of advanced computing and storage architecture for medical science in collaboration with US Universities since 2015. Since November 2016, He has been a professor at Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Yamagata University. He has been Director of ICT Industry Collaborations, Research Institute of Regional Value Creation Management since April 2017 and Project Director of Yamagata Prefecture IoT Acceleration Laboratory since August 2017. He has been Deputy Director of Business Research Institute for Glocal Innovation since January 2018. He currently serves an advisor role for ImPACT, Japanese government-funded program, and Research Evaluation Committee for National Institute for Material Science. He has also served as a committee member of domestic and international academic conferences such as Magnetic Society of Japan, IEICE, IEEE, ASME.
