We examined chemical ecological survey on Caribbean wild animals and plants, including an endangered mammal Cuban solenodon and local medicinal plants. Field surveys were conducted for a total of 140 days in the Republic of Cuba and the Dominican Republic, but solenodon was not captured. However, we have elucidated the evolutionary position of Cuban solenodon using DNA samples from individuals captured in previous studies, and newly found the anti-inflammatory effect of jacaranone isolated from the medicinal plant Jacaranda sp.

Knowledge and techniques using biological resources enclosed in Minor Subsistence in various Japanese villages, were revealed and reevaluated through the viewpoint of environmental education. Environmental educational programs subjected on Minor Subsistence were also created and executed. In the present study, we showed that farmer's markets displaying products by hunting-gathering, rearing and cultivation are working as windows visualizing local biodiversity and potentially available as excellent fields for environmental education.

  • Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists(B),2010 - 2012

Sounds of birds, frogs and bats around Miyagi Prefecture were recorded and edited to be used in environmental education materials. A sound library based on these sounds is being compiled to serve as reference for environmental studies in biodiversity conservation and education.
