インフルエンザウイルスとパラインフルエンザウイルスについて、令和5年度の研究で次のような実績を得た。
COVID-19が、2020年以前にみられた各ウイルスの周期性に、どのような変化を及ぼしたか解析した。毎年6月をピークに流行していたパラインフルエンザウイルス3型は、2021年に流行が回復したものの、2020年と2022年の流行が無く、2023年もごく少数の検出にとどまった。2021年の流行は呼吸器ウイルスの中でも早い回復であり、感染する年齢層が被るRSウイルスと同時期に流行が始まったこともあり、RSと同様に家族内感染が強く疑われた。しかし、その後の流行パターンはRSウイルスとは異なっており、ウイルスの伝播のしかたに違いがあることが示唆された。C型インフルエンザは1年おきの偶数年の流行だったが、2022年までの検出はなく、2023年に大きな流行になった。2024年の検出が今のところないため、奇数年の流行に変わった可能性がある。C型の増殖速度や進化速度はA型B型に比べて遅いため、コロナ禍からの回復は遅れると予測していたが、B型よりも1年も早く、A型H3と同時に流行が始まったのは驚きであった。感染者の年齢分布の解析や分離ウイルスの抗原解析を今後行う予定である。
重複感染例を収集する過程で、B型インフルエンザの山形系統とビクトリア系統に同時に感染した小児例に遭遇した。2016年に2つの系統が同時流行した際の症例で、体内で遺伝子再集合を起こしたかどうかの解析を行った。その結果、様々な種類の再集合体が産生されていることが判明した。B型インフルエンザの分子進化や流行に及ぼす遺伝子再集合の意義を明らかにする重要な知見を得ることができた。日本学術振興会
