    近年の地質学的研究により、現在の山形県最上川水系周辺には世界で４番目に古いとされる琵琶湖に匹敵する約600万年前から巨大な淡水湖や広大な干潟が発達したとされている。したがって、そこには多くの淡水生物が逃げ込んで隔離され、氷河期を経ても絶滅せずに独自の進化を遂げてきた可能性がある。そこで本研究では、最上川水系のもととなった巨大淡水湖や干潟がこのようにレフュージアとして作用し、固有種の分化や固有の地域集団の分化が起こったのかを明らかにするために、コイ科、ハゼ科、カジカ科など最上川水系に生息する淡水魚類数種を対象として、各種DNAマーカーに基づく集団遺伝学的解析を行い、最上川水系の魚類相形成史の一端を明らかにする。

  • 基盤研究(C)，2005年04月 ～ 2008年03月，絶滅危惧種ウケクチウグイの生息実態調査、遺伝的多様性解析に基づく保全法の検討

    　本研究では、分布が南東北の日本海側の大河川のみに極限され、どの生息地でも生息密度が低いため、その生態や行動がほとんどわかっていない絶滅危惧種、コイ科ウケクチウグイを対象として、フィールドでの綿密な生息実態調査と実験室内での飼育実験、および各種のDNA多型や酵素タンパク多型に基づく集団遺伝学的解析によって、その分布や回遊生態、食性、集団構造の詳細を把握して、ウケクチウグイの絶滅の危険度を推定し、どのような保全の方策を立てたらよいかを総合的に検討する。

  • 基盤研究(B)，2004年04月 ～ 2007年03月，パラオ諸島の海水湖に隔離されている海洋生物の進化要因・進化速度の解析

    　パラオ諸島に点在する海水湖群のうち、外海から分断されている部分還流型海水湖を閉鎖海洋モデルと位置付け、このような海水湖内に約１万年前から隔離されている海洋動植物の進化要因、進化速度を解析する。具体的には、外部形態、細胞形態を観察、同定し、外海に生息する同種または近縁種とともに相同な遺伝子の配列を比較して、系統解析や集団遺伝学的解析によって、海水湖内の海洋動植物の遺伝的多様性や遺伝的分化の程度を推定し、進化要因について考察する。

  • 基盤研究(C)，1999年04月 ～ 2003年03月，生体防御系遺伝子に基づくウグイ属魚類の種分化に関する研究

    生体防御という進化的に重要な機能を持ち、著しく多様なMHC遺伝子を新しい指標として、ウグイ属各種の遺伝的独立性や分化の程度、同一水系内のウグイ河川残留型と降海型の遺伝的関係などを解明し、ウグイ属の種分化の実態を総合的に考察する。また、この一連の研究によって、進化の研究におけるMHC遺伝子の有効性を実証する。
