We developed a thermosetting resin with stability under ambient conditions and environmental degradability based on a curing system of glycidates and acid anhydrides. This curing proceeds via alternating copolymerization of glycidate and anhydride. Accordingly, the main chain of the cured product comprises of the polyester backbone. The cured products show excellent adhesiveness to metal and inert polymeric substrates comparable to conventional epoxy curing systems. The cured products from glycidate was stable in neutral water, while completely degraded in compost. This degradation was not occurred for the alternative cured product from glycidyl ether.

We achieved the following results in development of tough material by copolymerization including cyclopolymerization giving slide-ring structure based on cyclopolymerization giving 19-membered ring.
We improved the mechanical strength of the materials by suppression of crystallization of axis molecules and optimization of curing conditions. This improvement realized the fabrication of super-tough film tolerant to almost 180 degree folding for 100thousand times. We have proposed novel amorphization technique for polysaccharides such as starch and cellulose by using mill machines equipped with temperature control units. In particular, low temperature milling at 10oC is effective to obtain amorphous cellulose. In this project we tried to make the amorphization technique to develop into a reactive milling technique which enables simultaneous operations of milling and chemical modification. We expect that structural change from crystal to amorphous will also give a chance for chemical modification. We added maleic anhydride to cellulose and milled it showing a possibility of esterification of cellulose under milling. It was found that general plastic materials such as polylactic acid and nylon etc. can be also amorphized by this milling machine. In addition, we showed that amorphized cellulose is superior to usual crystalline cellulose when they are used for composite with resin material.
